Connecting with my roots and my history. A recent post will tell you more about my 'secret garden' connection.
Fresh new inspiration added to Artfinder today <3
Inspiration, motivation and meaning.
I get asked a lot what inspires me to paint my nature themed images and its a question I always struggle to answer. I'm terrified of opening up the worm hole explanation of personal life experiences so lets see if writing it down works.
At the age of 5 my family moved to Trevarno, Cornwall. This was before Trevarno estate sold and turned into public gardens. We lived in the old game keepers house where I became lost every day amongst chickens, flowers, frogs and streams. Imagine having Helegan on your door step but never a single sole there to distract from the experience. Trevarno gardens WAS my garden. I knew all the secret pathways and walled gardens. I knew the family estate secrets! The lady of the estate used to hide a high heeled shoe in the grotto for us girls to lose our minds over. We believed in all fairy tales and we were princesses. Did you know that all trees were really made up of giants? And that their tree knots were really eyes?
Later when the estate sold the first time around, the garden was left empty for a few years. This is where I believe my true creativity began. Due to living far out and my best friends family having moved on, I was left alone to entertain myself in the acres of Trevarno estate. OK slight over-share: I developed an imaginary friend, his name was Gully and he was my prince etc etc. I can remember the most vivid details of that garden. I spent every free moment in there until dusk. I can see each flower and tree so clearly as well as the sound of the peacocks. That place was my sanctuary, my safe haven. There were no adults and no rules, just me and nature. It was the one place I never felt sad and it taught me the power of nature and imagination. I loved it there and think about it often.
At age 11 everything had changed and I moved to America. At the time it was the most devastating experience and I actually cant remember a large chunk of that time. I came round eventually and once again, surrounded by the most beautiful scenery ever. We lived in the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains.
In highschool, art was my best subject (shock) and I had the most inspirational teacher. I learned art history for the first time as well as different techniques. She saw huge potential in me and challenged my boundaries. Through her I developed obsessions with Klimt, Monet, M.C Escher and Leonardo Da Vinci.
I hadn't realised or been able to explain until recently how all the above mapped and interlinked so much with the work I do now. I dont know why, but it gives me a huge sense of relief
